With no suitable trainable launcher available in the market, Chemring has developed its own solution CENTURION™. It is capable of carrying 12x30mm rounds, the NATO standard for naval decoys, and the whole assembly is encolsed within a radar cross section (RCS) reduction cover. CENTURION's unique feature is teh vertical storage of the roudns on a rotating plinth shich reduces the effects of rotational and firing foces, thus making the launcher structure lighter. The launcher design also allows other calbire munitions to be accommodated.
In operation, when an incoming missile is detected CENTRION™ determines teh approprite response and rotates the plinth so that the required round is on the optimum bearing. The barrel is then depressed to the desired firing angle as determind by the sytem algorithms. Launcher positioning takes no more than 3 seconds and angular accuracy is maintained through compensation of ship movement.
CENTURION™ is an exciting project that is attracting much interest from major companies and customers. The development programme involves producing a full size demonstrator, with initial firing trials underway by the end of the year.
