MJU-27B

Description

The MJU-27A/B decoy device is a Special Material Decoy (SMD) Pyrophoric Infrared (IR) Countermeasure developed and manufactured for the United States Navy. It is designed to defend helicopters, fighters and lower signature aircraft from MANPAD and air-to-air missile threats worldwide. The MJU-27A/B utilizes Special Material, Alloy Surfaces’ proprietary patented technology, to emit IR energy in the same band as an aircraft. The MJU-27A/B is manufactured in a round 36-mm standard form factor and can be employed using the ALE-39 series or any countermeasures dispensing system capable of employing a round 36-mm flare. It contains no pyrotechnics other than a CCU-63 squib required to expel the SMD from the flare casing. Once expelled, the SMD reacts with oxygen to rapidly oxidize and generate an IR signature. However, the temperature is less than half the temperature of conventional MTV and SMD is extremely safe to handle.
